A week in the Summer

We saw this beautiful bluebird last weekend when I was up at the gorge with Roy.
The bird put on quite a show for us, patiently waiting for us to get its picture.

This picture is out of place.  This was taken at the McDonalds in Israel (the only place open for lunch on our way to Jordan.  Note the rifle!  This picture belongs to Tracy and Rock Allen.  We had seen a guy in the hotel and again at the wailing wall with a similar weapon and had asked our guide if he was hotel security.  We were told that he was just a regular guy with a permit.  We didn't take a picture, but when we talked about it with Tracy and Rock they produced this one.  It was a different guy (but same idea).

Speaking of Tracy and Rock:  We met them on our trip to Israel.  Since they live in Ogden we thought it would be fun to get together, so we had them for over for dinner on Wednesday night.  We had a good time getting to know each other better and reminiscing about our trip (Tracy said her favorite thing was dipping her feet in the Sea of Galilee).  We found out (on Relatives Around Us) that we are fourth cousins twice removed (I'm two generations ahead of her).  To find our common ancestor we had to go to James Henry Hart's parents.

Crista was down for one of Zack's appointments with several of his doctors this week.  His palate surgery is coming up in the fall.  One of the doctors said, "He has so much personality," and he or she recommended to Crista that she get with her early intervention people and get him some technological tools to start helping him to identify pictures, etc.

Zack:  You wouldn't think this would warm a mother's heart (and a grandmother's) so much. Giving Zack mobility has made a huge difference in his activities.  It's helped him to start socializing and...getting into things!

We had the opportunity to see Ori and her acting group perform a number of songs and acting scenes.  They used the main stage at the Centerpoint Legacy Theater, so there was plenty of room.  Sara saved us seats on the front row.  Ori did great.  It's fun to see our grandchildren develop their talents.  They're all so unique.

Roy's contribution for the week:

These were only visible by going on the quick route.  Roy and Sara did not see them last week.  You had to be right below the cliffs to see them.

Dear Family,

As some of you may know, I went up to the gorge Friday night by myself as I needed to re-ride some of the Cedar Mountain ride that I am doing with my club on July 11th and 12th . Sara and Nick were really great to help me a couple of times in riding backup while we figured out the Cedar Mountain and High Uinta’s rides. This one I just needed to figure out a couple of segments which had private property issues. Since I'm not shy, I drove over yesterday morning to the property owners house on Washam Road. I knocked on the door and the wife answered. I didn’t quite know what to expect from them. They graciously invited me in. She called for her husband, Robert Slogowsky. I explained that I was associated with a side-by-side club and that I was requesting permission to pass thru his properties on the mountain. He was very cooperative and said that it shouldn’t be a problem and to enjoy the ride.

Anyway, I spent about 3.5 hours scoping out the rest of the ride. In particular, I wanted to share a short experience on the ride. Once I figured out the end segment of the ride I ended up on the North side of the plateau/mountain. I didn’t want to ride the whole ride because that would have taken all day, so I wanted to find a short cut to the South segment which I was able to do on Rim Road. It was a smooth trail/dirt road so I was able to travel quickly at around 45 miles/hour. As I was moving along at about that speed, I noticed to my right a doe antelope that was running on the other side of the fence parallel to me at the same speed. I wondered, what is she doing? She kept pace with me for about 10 minutes before she peeled off. It was pretty cool! I called a gorge friend of mine Gary Boyd (a former retired game warden) and asked him about the experience. He just said, antelope were born to run, so it was probably just bored and saw this thing cruising along and thought that it might be fun to race it.

Which it did very well.

Love, Dad
