Time in the Gorge/Family

I have a scathingly brilliant idea.*  I know many of us are practicing our musical instruments, some of us are artists, and there are even some gymnasts and dancers, etc.  I think we should have talent shows when we get together as a family.  Maybe the first time we could let the kids perform or share something they have been working on, and the next time focus on the adults--or we could do a music talent show one week, and the next time we get together vary it up with art or something.  What do you all think?

Dad and I had a relaxing weekend at the cabin. It's very cold up there, but we dress warm and go on walks, and we work on projects.  Dad even takes his guitar so he can practice.

Because it's so cold, hot baths are very tempting.  Without me knowing, dad began filling up the tub while we were watching a program on TV.  After a bit, he disappeared.  Finally, I went to find what he was doing.  I walked into a bathroom full of very wet towels on the floor.  He was quietly cleaning up a flood.  We had noticed last time we took a bath that there were no overflow valves on the tub.  I had thought it wasn't a problem--but apparently it can be 😀. I grabbed some more towels and started helping.  I couldn't help laughing, it was pretty funny.  At least there's no basement to flood!  Dad told me he was glad I was laughing about it.  I think he was worried to call for help because he thought I'd be mad.

We always see wildlife when we go on walks or rides, usually deer, but occasionally we see something more interesting.  This weekend we saw this animal:

We thought for a minute it was a cat.  I said, "I don't think it's a cat--its legs are too stubby.  Sure enough it was a weasel.  Their coats turn white in the winter so they can blend in with the snow.

We also watched this hawk for several minutes before it flew off.

It's so cold up there that the lake is frozen.  We had fun walking on the ice and breaking the shelf that had formed along the shoreline. There are cracks like the one below every so often.  We found some areas that were very smooth and might be fun to ice skate on.  At church we talked to a man who used to live in Centerville but has lived in Manilla now for 20 or 30 years.  We told him about walking on the ice, and he warned us not to drive on it. Then he proceeded to tell us his story of when he and his buddies were headed out to go ice fishing.  He was ready before his friends, so they told him he could just go on ahead. He set out across the ice and got towards the middle when all of a sudden, his wheels went through the ice.  He found himself in the lake and each time he tried to get hold on the ice so he could try and get out, the ice would break.  As he kept trying, he distinctly heard a voice tell him to swim the way he came, so he turned around and kept swimming.  He said, "The next thing I knew, I was standing on the ice."  He looked around and saw his friends and they were quite a distance away because they'd headed in almost the opposite direction he had gone.  He began waving his arms hoping they would see him because he knew he would never make it back to shore on his own.  Finally, he was spotted and his buddies came towards him.  When they got close enough, they asked, "Where's your 4-wheeler?"  He pointed and said, "It's in the water".  He said it must not have been his time to go because it was a miracle he made it out of that situation.
We weren't planning on driving on the ice, but if and when we go ice skating, we'll stay near the shore and check out the ice really well before we attempt it.

Roy is standing by a crack in the ice.  You could put your fingers in the crack,
but it was
thoroughly frozen all around it.  We walked around the shore line over towards some fishermen to see if they'd caught anything.  They said that hadn't had any luck.  On the right is the marina.  It's completely empty of boats, of course, but also all of the buildings have been pulled out of the water.

It really is a winter wonderland in Washum, Wyoming.  And boy was it cold!  I'm standing on the lake in the picture on the right.

The pole barn is nearly done.  We're just waiting on doors.

I got a few sewing projects done.  We hung the moose painting (by Jieun) on the wall.  This picture doesn't do it justice--it looks awesome.

Roy and I took Ori and Yuna on their birthday dates on Jan. 26.  Late for Ori, and early for Yuna.  We took them to the toy store and the book store and they chose exactly the same gifts as each other.  Then we had pizza.  Yuna had pepperoni and Ori had cheese.  There was the tiniest bit of pepperoni on Ori's half.  She wasn't quite sure what to do with it, then she said, "I guess I'll just eat it."  They had so much fun playing together that we let them stay at our house for most of the day.  When I finally took them home, they asked if Yuna could go all the way with me to drive Ori home.  I said, "Sure," not realizing that they'd been conniving together to continue their play day.  When we got to Ori's house, Yuna hopped out, too, on the pretense of saying hi to her cousins.  A few minutes later they came out and said that I could go; they'd cleared it with the parents to have a late night together.  It's so great that they love to be together.  They are only one month and 7 days apart in age.

Pictures shared over the Rasband Clan text group:

Yuli, loving baby Foster and wishing she could sleep with her;  Todd, giving his mom his cheese face along with what looks like some feisty attitude in church 😀

Foster.  You know her parents are in love with her.  They sent me this picture
along with  about 5 others that were almost exactly the same.

The family got together Sunday evening for dinner.  Crista had planned on coming, but the foot of snow they woke up to in Logan convinced her otherwise.  We haven't had the family for dinner since Christmas Eve.
