Picture Essay of our San Rafael Swell Trip

Hyeji, Doyeon, Roy and I arrived in Green River, UT. in time to eat dinner at the Chow Hound.  The picture on the right is outside the restaurant--while we were all still clean.  After we got back to the hotel, I prepared for my Institute class.  Zoom is great because I can teach anywhere; as long as I have internet.  Roy and the girls were going to take a walk, but they were all tired so they just quietly read or did projects while I taught.
The rest of the pictures may or may not be in order, since they are from three different cameras, but you'll get the idea.

Roy deemed the rock formation on the left, "Catharine's Castle."  It would have been a good point of reference on our return, except that there were a lot of similar formations.

The girls found a lot of fun places to pose for pictures.

It was just a little on the chilly side, but beautiful.  Doyeon and Hyeji mostly sat in the back, except on the 2nd day when we gave them each an opportunity to drive.

We lunched at Hondu Arch.  To take the picture I was standing a little below Hyeji and Doyeon and left.
We asked who named it Hondu Arch and the answer: John Wayne (not true of course).

For dinner we met Darrell and Shelley Miles at the Tamarisk restaurant.  It's pretty good for being out in the sticks.
The Mile's live across the street from Doyeon and Hyeji.  When they drove by us in their side by side in the morning, Roy asked the girls, "Do you know these people."  Doyeon glanced at them and said, "No."  It took her a minute for the realization to hit her.  They were in full gear with helmets, so I can see why it took her a minute.  Shelley and Darrell are currently serving a mission from home.  They teach classes to members from Africa on English Connect (which is a prerequisite for Pathways for non-English speakers).  Nan and Bruce had the opportunity to do some pre-mission training with them. I think this is their 4th or 5th mission.

The Miles took this picture of us from where they were standing in the other picture.  We should have switched places because the lighting was much better in their picture.

Hyeji drove for a bit.  She said it was really scary.  I think she secretly liked it.

While Hyeji was driving I took my turn in the back seat.

Doyeon took her turn driving at the very end of the ride, after we were back to the truck.

Hyeji found a drumstick, ketchup and mustard for a snack on the trail.

I think this is Hyeji because it is her hat.  And my coat.  When I sat in the back I realized it was slightly cooler there.  I thought it would be warmer because of the engine.

Hyeji sent this first picture to her friends and told them it was our Air B'nB.  She told them it had been misrepresented in the advertisement and they wouldn't give us our money back.  Her friends were very sympathetic, "Oh Hyeji, you poor thing."  In the other pictures you can see that we're very glad she was joking with them!
We literally felt like we were in the middle of nowhere, but at one time 450 people lived there for mining (cobalt and uranium).  I hope that accounted for the abandoned cars and trucks and other paraphernalia.  Since one was a Studebaker from around the 1940's, I'm guessing that's where the trash came from.

An entrance to the mine

This trip we didnt' get any pictures of the other riders, but there were about 34 vehicles on the ride.  It's pretty fun to have the social aspect when you stop for breaks and lunch.  I'm not sure how much Hyeji and Doyeon liked being with the mostly senior crowd, but they interacted and seemed to enjoy themselves.
Jieun told me that they Doyeon seemed less exhausted than Hyeji.

As you can see, everything was just beautiful.  The weather was perfect; cool and sunny (but not cold).
Then we came home...As I'm writing this letter it is 37 degrees and snowing.  This is not what we wanted to come home to.  I know that yesterday it got up to 77 degrees; it was hotter here while we were gone than it was in the San Rafael Swells.  I guess this is typical of a Utah Spring.
