Rare Time with the Jacksons

We flew to Georgia 2 days after Christmas to visit with the rest of our family in Augusta.  We were a little worried about traveling, since we'd been hearing horror stories on the news.  On Monday night we saw that our plane was already going to be a few minutes delayed, and the next morning the delay had increased to nearly an hour.  That did give us some concern because of the connecting flight, but we were able to adjust the time we left for the airport so there was no inconvenience up front.  Sure enough, however, we missed the connecting flight, so then we had to decide what our options were.  We chose the option to wait for the next flight which was nearly 6 hours later (11:30 pm), and then we settled down to wait.  Since we were on Utah time, it wasn't too terrible, but Elise had to stay up in order to pick us up at the Augusta airport.  We arrived there at approximately 12:30.  By the time we got our bags, met Elise and made the drive to the Jackson home it was about 1:30 am.

The next morning Maverick reminded us that we had promised him and Beverly birthday dates to have some lunch and pick out a present.  Mav wanted to go to a particular Target.  Roy pronounced it the "French" way, which upset Mav a little bit because he couldn't understand that Target and Tarje(t) with a silent "t" were the same place.  Mav was worried all the way to the store that we weren't headed to the "right" Target.  He tried to give us directions, but led us slightly astray, so we had to follow GPS.

This was Mav's gift of choice: A dinosaur mask and claws.  I won't tell on him that he was a little bit sad in the car after he got his gift because the store (or the web) didn't have a "driver sphere" which was apparently something in the movie that Mav was sure had to be a toy, too.  Beverly was thrilled with a barbie and a baby doll with bath accessories.

The next day we drove 3 hours to Charleston, South Carolina.  First stop: USS Yorktown Aircraft Carrier.  This is the stuff Roy loves.  The boys and Bev seemed to love it, too.  Mav told me he wanted to go back--he really liked the mess hall with the fake food and the fake people.  There were lots of step ladder descents and ascents to make it fun for kids.

The above 3 pictures: Andy waited in line for 20 minutes so Mav, Max, Bev, Roy and Elise could get inside this space capsule and have some sort of video experience.

 On the bridge:  I never really thought about the fact that an aircraft carrier has to be driven.

Later we went to downtown Charleston to meet the Acree family for dinner.  They live about 1/2 hour from the city.  On the way we passed this awesome firehouse.  Roy had the fireman get in the picture with us. Mav and Bevy were too shy to get into the picture. When we passed the firehouse again on the way home, they had been out on a call and were putting the fire engine away.  They backed it smoothy and quickly into it's spot.

Annie and Chris Acree, Roy and Catharine: These are our great friends
                 from when we lived in Atlanta.

Rachel's daughter, Autumn; her husband Chad; Rachel; Rachel's younger daughter, Amber; Max, Bevy, Mav, Andy, Elise, and Harvey.  Rachel and Elise were best friends growing up in Georgia (the boys were best friends with Sterling Acree).

Our 2nd day in Charleston we took a ferry over to see Fort Sumter.  I told Elise that one thing that made Fort Sumter interesting to me is that Joseph Smith forecasted that South Carolina would be where the  Civil War would begin.

One of Joseph Smith’s most well-known millennial prophecies related to the American Civil War. On December 25, 1832, Joseph Smith received a revelation prophesying that a war between the northern and southern U.S. states would begin in South Carolina and that wars and uprisings throughout the earth would finally result in the “end of all Nations” at the time of the Second Coming of Jesus Christ. At the time the revelation was received, South Carolina and the federal government of the United States were involved in a dispute, but it was peacefully resolved the next March. Years later, Joseph reiterated his prophecy that war would break out in South Carolina over slavery debates, as it did nearly 20 years after Joseph Smith’s death. (Church History Topics: Prophecies of Joseph Smith)

Doctrine and Covenants 87:

Verily, thus saith the Lord concerning the awars that will bshortly come to pass, beginning at the rebellion of cSouth Carolina, which will eventually terminate in the death and misery of many souls;

And the atime will come that bwar will be poured out upon all nations, beginning at this place.

For behold, the Southern States shall be divided against the Northern States, and the Southern States will call on other nations, even the nation of Great Britain, as it is called, and they shall also call upon other nations, in order to defend themselves against other nations; and then awar shall be poured out upon all nations.

And it shall come to pass, after many days, aslaves shall rise up against their masters, who shall be marshaled and disciplined for war.

And it shall come to pass also that the aremnants who are left of the land will marshal themselves, and shall become exceedingly angry, and shall vex the Gentiles with a sore vexation.

And thus, with the asword and by bloodshed the inhabitants of the earth shall bmourn; and with cfamine, and plague, and earthquake, and the thunder of heaven, and the fierce and vivid lightning also, shall the inhabitants of the earth be made to feel the wrath, and indignation, and dchastening ehand of an Almighty God, until the consumption decreed hath made a full fend of all gnations;

That the cry of the saints, and of the ablood of the saints, shall cease to come up into the ears of the Lord of bSabaoth, from the earth, to be avenged of their enemies.

Wherefore, astand ye in holy places, and be not moved, until the day of the Lord come; for behold, it cometh bquickly, saith the Lord. Amen.

We were instructed not to give in to the temptation of sitting on the rock walls to take pictures, but these two missed the memo, so we quickly took a shot--since they were already there.  These bricks were made and laid by slaves.  Sadly, you could even see their fingerprints imbedded in the bricks.

We drove home from South Carolina and enjoyed a New Year's Eve party one day early at the home of Elise and Andy's friends.  They were very inclusive and we had a good time participating in the games and the treats.  The next night we played online games with our kids and Hyeji, which was fun for most.  Max was very disappointed that there were no real New Years Eve celebrations with fireworks, etc.  But, Andy had to work and dad and I didn't even think about fireworks.  Of course, Elise didn't want to put on a fireworks show for the kids without Andy...So, maybe next year, Max!

We left on Sunday morning in time for Elise and Andy to get the kids to church.  That morning Beverly told me she'd sent me a message.  I didn't think anything about it until I checked my email later.  Here's the message:
